Design
The SoundPEATS TrueAir2 wireless earbuds are the closest alternative I’ve found to the official Apple AirPods. They have an open air design that does not seal to your ear canal, which allows the outside sounds in so you can hear what is going on around you. I prefer this whenever I’m running outside and need to hear the traffic around me.
The SoundPEATS TrueAir2 have a stem like the AirPods and a more matte finish on the exterior. I found the fit to be comfortable like the AirPods even when wearing them for extended periods of time.
The charging case is just a smidge larger than the Apple AirPods, but it is still pocket-friendly. A magnet helps hold the earbuds in place while they’re in the case.
Performance: SoundPEATS TrueAir2 vs Apple AirPods
The sound quality on the SoundPEATS TrueAir2 is very good, with some surprisingly decent bass. The sound quality isn’t quite at the level of the Apple AirPods, but it is very close and I find it more than satisfactory for listening to music while running or doing yard work.
The SoundPEATS TrueAir2 are lacking some of the functions of the Apple AirPods. Unfortunately, there is no auto-pause feature when you remove either earbud. In addition, while the iPhone will show a single, combined battery level of the earbuds, it does not show the battery level of the individual earbuds nor the charging case. In addition, you’re not able to customize the tap functions of the earbuds like you can with the AirPod.
I had purchased the SoundPEATS TrueAir2 for running as I feared that my copious amount of sweat would eventually ruin my AirPods (which thankfully hasn’t happened yet). However, the SoundPEATS TrueAir2 perform great with a solid Bluetooth connection. They are definitely a worthy contender for anyone looking for a cheaper AirPod alternative.
Features
- Touch controls: While you can’t customize the touch controls like you can on the Apple AirPods, I found most of the features I need are already programmed. For example, you can decrease the volume with a single tap of the left earbud (and increase it with a single tap of the right earbud). You can play and pause by double-tapping the left earbud, and summon Siri with a triple-tap of the right earbud.
- One earbud mode: You can use either earbud by itself while the other earbud is in the charging case.
- Game mode: The earbuds have a low latency “game mode” that can be accessed with a triple tap of the left earbud.
Battery Life
The earbuds will last up to 5 hours per charge. The charging case provides 4 additional charges, giving you up to 25 hours of total playback time. The charging case can be recharged with a modern USB-C connection (however, there is no Qi wireless charging).
Our Verdict
The SoundPEATS TrueAir2 earbuds are a strong performer and are definitely worth considering if you're looking for a cheaper alternative to Apple's AirPods. They have long battery life, touch controls, and a stable Bluetooth connection.
