Dragon Touch has customized their popular M7 tablet specifically to kids, by adding the Zoodles interface and wrapping it in a protective silicone case.

PROs

  • Zoodles: The tablet comes with “Zoodles” pre-installed, which provides games, books, and mini-games that are age-appropriate for kids. Parents can configure what is and what is not allowed, then the child is locked into the interface and cannot exit without entering the parent’s year of birth. Zoodles also offer’s a Parent’s Dashboard that provides usage reports and game ratings.
  • Thick case: This tablet comes with a thick silicone case. This helps protect the tablet from drops and bumps. It won’t protect the tablet from everything, but for everyday use by child, it should hold up well.
  • Quad Core Processor: The tablet comes with a quad-core processor that keeps moving things along at a good pace. This allows kids to jump into their games or adults to pull up a web page fairly quickly. It may not be top-of-the-line, but I found general web surfacing and app loading to be acceptable. Some games do run choppier than they would on other tablets, but the Subway Surfers game showed in my video performed very well. For this interested, the GeekBench multicore score came in at 609.
  • 8GB of storage: The tablet comes of 8GB of built-in storage with about 6GB of that available. This refers to how many apps, photos, videos, and music files you can store directly on the tablet. If that’s not enough space, you can expand the storage with inexpensive Micro SD cards, like the ones you would use in your phone and some digital cameras. The slot is located on the back of the unit.
  • 1 GB of RAM: The amount of RAM in the tablet allows it to handle multiple applications at once and keep thing moving along smoothly. 1 GB is a good amount for a “budget” tablet and makes switching between apps fast.
  • Display: The M7 has a colorful display with wide viewing angles (so it doesn’t look washed out at an angle). This makes the tablet great for playing games and watching Netflix or YouTube.
  • Bluetooth: This tablet also has Bluetooth so you can use it with Bluetooth keyboards and Bluetooth speakers. Sometimes Bluetooth is omitted on lower-end tablets, so I’m happy to find it on this Dragon Touch.
  • Two cameras: I couldn’t locate the specs of the cameras, but there is a camera on both the front and the back. Low light performance is not great. I wouldn’t depend on taking stellar photos or videos with the cameras, but it’s nice to have the option to grab a quick snapshot or perform a video call.
  • Build: The Dragon Touch has a plastic case, but placing it in the thick silicone case makes it very durable and more likely to stand up to bumps and drops.
  • Screen protector included: I like that the tablet came with a basic screen protector already applied.

CONs

  • Camera quality: The performance of the cameras in low light is poor, and can make indoor video calls problematic.

Overall, I like the high quality screen on this unit, which makes it great for game play and watching videos. The thick silicone case makes the tablet very durable and kid-friendly.
