Today the new iPhone 5S was announced.  Alongside the impressively new powerful A7 chip, the iPhone 5S contains an interesting new chip to help you monitor your activity level.

The iPhone 5S will contain an M7 chip that measures motion data continuously, with accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass support.  It will enable a new generation of health and fitness apps.  Nike is onboard with a Nike+ Move app that uses the M7 chip and GPS to keep track of the activities you’re doing.

It will definitely be interesting to see the new apps this M7 chip will bring us.  Since we always have our phones on us anyways, tracking our daily activity on our phone makes logical sense.

Unfortunately, there was no mention of an iWatch at today’s event.

Other iPhone 5S features announced today:

  • New camera: providing better flash, a burst capture mode, and image stabilization
  • Touch ID: say goodbye to passcodes as you unlock your phone with your fingerprint, which is stored encrypted on the device (and not shared “in the cloud”)
  • The iWork suit of apps (Pages, Numbers, Keynote, iPhoto, iMovie) will be free to new iOS device purchasers
  • The original iPhone 5 will now be the iPhone 5C and come in multiple, plastic colors at a reduced price
  • iOS 7 will be released on September 18 and will be available for the iPhone 4 and up as well as the iPad 2 and up
